Introduction

Hockey is a popular sport that is played by all countries around the world. The popularity of the game of hockey is increasing day by day just like the cricket game. The game dates back to 600 BC. Played in ancient Greece during the East.

In the old days, to play this game there was a simple ball and a wooden stick. Which was not bent like the current hockey stick. A game similar to current hockey was previously played in England.



Rules and regulations in hockey were developed from England itself. But in the olden times, if a player scored from 14 meters away, then it was not considered a goal. However, now this rule has been changed by improving the rules.

In view of the increasing popularity of the game of hockey, the Hockey Association was established in 1886. After this, there was a new life in the hockey game because after this the sport was being adopted by every country.


Hockey was first included in the Olympic Games in the year 1908, in that year only the game was played by Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, Germany and France.

India's contribution to hockey game -

India has a huge contribution to the game of hockey. The popularity of hockey in India is like the game of cricket, here hockey players are seen with respect. In view of the increasing popularity of hockey in India, 1885-86 Hockey Club was established in Kolkata.

Indian players took their first step in hockey in the Olympics played in Amsterdam in 1928 for the first time. The Indian team won the gold medal that year. After this, the Indian team had a gold medal in the hockey game because India won 6 gold medals in the Olympics played between 1928 and 1956.

This era is called the Golden Age of India. Due to such a good performance of the Indian hockey game, people of all countries started seeing Indian players with respect. Major Dhyanchand was the most important player in India to win the gold medal, who took the Indian hockey game to new heights.

In the olden days, women were forbidden to play hockey because at that time there was a Victorian era in which women were prohibited from playing sports. But in spite of all this, the popularity of women playing hockey was increasing.

And from 1895, women's hockey teams started participating in friendship competitions. But the women's hockey team was not allowed to play in international games until the 1970s. With the change of time, the first women's World Cup of hockey was held in the year 1974.

And in view of the increasing popularity of this sport in the year 1980 in the Women's Hockey Olympics, this sport was included. Women hockey players are constantly getting encouragement in India, due to which the women's hockey team has performed well globally in the last few decades.
