A drowning man catches at a straw
A drowning man, finding no way to save his life, loses all hope. He also becomes desperate. At this juncture, if he finds a piece of straw floating near him in the water he hopes to catch at it and be saved from drowning. He knows that piece of straw is too small and fragile a thing to save him. But in his desperation, he forgets this simple thing and anxiously tries to catch at the straw. In the same way when one finds himself in the midst of stupendous danger and there is absolutely no way to escape a small and insignificant help arouses great hope in him. For example, if a negligent student, sho has not done his lessons well and sits for the examination hoping to pass, gets a little help either from his neighbour or from malpractice he feels greatly satisfied. This invariably happens in desperate times.
