Example is better than precept
It is always easier to give advice to others to do something rather than to do it oneself. One may go on offering advice about rules of conduct, modes of action, and so on without following them oneself. Such a preceptor is no better than a book on which are written so many rules and regulations and things like that. He is sometimes a hypocrite too. Such people are not taken seriously by anybody. Rather he who not only gives precepts but also follows them and lives up to them is a good preceptor. He sets reals examples for others to follow. So an example is always better than precept. A teacher who himself follows and practices certain moral principles can impress his students better than one who merely lectures on principles and does nothing by himself. His teaching is empty, barren, and ineffective. Great men like Mahatma Gandhi practiced everything they preached.
