Practical experience has proved that silence is better than speech The word speech here means garrulity or too much pointless talk. Speech is an important gift of mankind. We communicate with others through our power of speech. We know and understand each other with the help of speech. But it does not necessarily follow that one should talk and "talk and abuse his power of speech. We often come across people who love to talk endlessly and pointlessly. In the process, they fail to make an impression. Worse still, too much talk exposes their weakness and limitations both in the grasp of ideas and art of delivery. The precise speech will not betray any shortcoming. The word silence in the proverb means short, exact, and measured speech. it does not mean complete silence of the dumb. Brief and precise speech becomes very effective and impresses the audience. It reveals the speaker's depth of knowledge. Hence, speech is silver, silence golden.
